Eagles Look Forward to 2012 Outdoor Season
With just two months until the kick off of the 2012 Outdoor track and field season the Carolina
Eagles are looking forward to what may shape up as one their most successful years. The return of
several USATF Individual National Competitors for the 2012 season give promise to continued
development in the sport of track and field.
For many of the athletes they will be embarking on challenges as they move into older age divisions
and will be the youngest competitors in their field. This however does not sway the confidence of the
athletes or coaches. Because this team focuses on the overall development of all participants in the
sport of track and field. Organization president, Maureen Smith says, "I am hoping that all of our
athletes perform as well as they did last year and give 110% no matter where they place as long as
they have done their best that is what is most important to us."
Among some of the youngest competitors were first year Eagle Xavier Nicholas and his fellow
sub-bantam peers Nelson Anderson and Skylar Quillet. Because 2012 was the first year USATF
permitted participants under the age of nine to advance to national competition, Ms Smith believes it
was important to these athletes to be able to advance as far as their performances would take them
and is a symbol of their overall accomplishments.
Also making a first time appearance in the bantam age division were Jade Demps (javelin) and Kyna
"Rhani" Robinson who after clinching the 800m USATF indoor track and field title advanced to the
USATF Outdoor Nationals in two events(800m/1500m) where she brought home gold in the 1500m.
Taylor Sutton who after not participating her first year in USATF Junior Olympic Competition
returned in her third year to advance for competition in the High Jump missing the heptathlon by only
one place. Rounding out the elementary aged children was Melicia Mouzzon who in her fourth year
of competition was returning for her second year of USATF National competition in both the 100m
and 200m where her veteran experience landed her on the podium with a bronze medal after placing
eighth the previous year. She had previously performed as a sub-bantam with-out the opportunity
to advance to USATF National Competition.
In addition our middle school athletes brought strong rankings and attendance to the competition.
Courtney Murph, in her most successful season ever advanced for competition in three individual
events more than any other Eagle and Eboni Roberson, advancing for her fourth straight year with
competitions in both the 800m and 1500m.
Ms Smith has a few words of encouragement for the 2012 season, "trust in the coaching
staff...support the children and coaches...I'm looking forward to a successful season and wish
everyone good luck". With that being said, the Carolina Eagles are proud to have inducted
Courtney Murph and Melicia Mouzzon as the newest members of the Carolina Eagles Hall of Fame.
In order to be a Hall of Fame member, you have to qualify for Nationals in an individual event in two
separate years.
