Jayquan crowned the tracked
If you missed the NCHSAA 4A track and field championships at JDL Fast Track you missed what was one of the most impressive performances by a single athlete if you didn't get the opportunity to watch Jayquan Williams, former SE Raleigh HS Bulldog real in the competition in both his 1000m and in the last event of the evening the 4x400m relay leading his teammates to an (8) point victory in his first and senior year at Green Hope in Cary, NC.
Chapel Hill's Connor Peebles, the top seed in the race lead the pack for the entire race, Jayquan seized and opportunity to put his sprinting talent to use as he in the last lap of the race managed to move from sixth place to a commanding first place finish in a personal best peformance of 2:31.00.
If you left before the final race of the evening Jayquan wasn't done...he took the baton in fifth place with SER HS 60 meters ahead however on the final lap of his anchor leg Jayquan, for the second time realed in each one of his competitors one by one in the final curve of the race and with less than 30 meters in the final event of the evening took over the number one spot for a second GOLD medal performance.
Kyna Robinson brings home three medals in her freshman debut
Southeast Raleigh HS freshman, Kyna "Rhani" Robinson didn't just walk away from the NCHSAA Indoor Track and Field championships with three medals, she anchored both the 4x800 and 4x400m relay to gold medal victories. After the conclusion of the 4x800m relay she completed an interview with the News and Observer. The 4x800m relay set at new 4A record. Rhani also competed in the 500m where she won bronze against a field of college bound seniors and juniors being the only freshman athlete to make the podium in a seasons best performance of 1:16.51.
Her contributions lead the Southeast Raleigh HS girls track and field team to a 4A State Championships
With just a few months until High School graduation, Jayon Woodard who's heading to UNC Charlotte in the fall kicked off his senior year with a gold medal performance at the NCHSAA 4A indoor championships in the 500m.
As High Schools embark on the kick off of their indoor track and field season the Carolina Eagles are looking forward to the return of Taylor Sutton at Garner HS who returns after top five rankings for 2015 in both the High Jump and Long Jump while Samara Gibson will begin her junior year coming off of a career best performance in her 400m and 200m. Chardonei Sutton improved her performances during USATF competition adding the Long Jump to her resume and posting personal bests in the Triple Jump. New to the high school track and field scene will be our 14yr old 2015 outdoor athletes Melicia Mouzzon and Kyna Robinson. Melicia Mouzzon running at Heritage HS coming off a a personal best outdoor club season where her 100m PR of 12.18 and 200m PR of 24.94 is sure to shake up the rankings for the 2016 season. Kyna Robinson will join the Southeast Raleigh HS women's team which has been a strong program in the past brining her outdoor club season 400m PR of 57.89 just a second shy of their current 400m womens runners however she has great promise in returning to her 800m and 1500m skills to add points for the team. Joining her at Southeast Raleigh will be teammate Navaeh Haddcok who will bring her success at Triple Jump to the team for added points in the field.
In a state where the Javelin is not even a contested event for High School Athletes our very own Jade Demps is writing a new page in the THROWS books for youth track and field and in particulare for female athletes pursuing evnets which are traditionally underrepresented.
Jade finished off her outdoor 2015 season in the 14 and under age division with a seasons best throw of 83'1.64 ranking her as one of the top eight recorded female javelin throwers in the state of NC and what is even more impressive is that she is just a middle school athlete.
